Hastings, Neb. - Columbia College Bowling puts together a fantastic weekend to place second out of 11 teams at the Bronco Open in Hastings, Nebraska. The Cougars not only took second place as a team, but for the second time this season
Jordyn Czerw picked up the top individual honor on the ladies side.
Czerw averaged 201 across the six individual games on Saturday. Her 1206 total was good enough to win by 75 pins. This is Czerw's second title of the season after picking up her first at the Lions Classic two weeks ago. She becomes Columbia's first repeat titlist. It's her third career All-Tournament team honor after being named to the Clash of the Spartans all-tournament team in 2021.
After day one in team play, Columbia found themselves in third place trailing Iowa Central and Hastings. The Cougars led after sets three and four in the middle of the day. A combination of tough breaks and other schools putting together great games led to the third place finish in day one. Columbia had 5102 team score after the six games on Saturday.
Czerw was the highest finishing Cougar. However,
Mollie Goodwin also placed in the top 20. She took 16
th averaging 168.3 across the six games. Freshman
Averi Hawkins bowled five of the six games but still placed 49
th in the field of 83 bowlers.
Day two was an up and down battle not only for Columbia but the whole center. Seeing themselves fall to fourth after the second set, Columbia put together two solid sets of Baker games to finish the day. It was the fourth and final set of four Baker games that helped lift the Cougars. Trailing Hastings, in third place, by 40 pins and Morningside, in second, by 41, Columbia shot their highest four game total of the day to not only surpass both schools in the final standings but also make up nearly 100 pins on first place Iowa Central. Columbia averaged 167.3 across the 16 Baker games.
The Tritons would win first place USBC power points with a 7841. Columbia placed second overall with a 7779 ahead of Morningside's 7768 and Hastings' 7755. The top four teams qualified for a best two-of-three Baker game matchplay bracket.
Columbia matched up in the semifinal with Morningside. The Cougars started fast and picked up the first game win 223-142. Switching lanes also switched the scores, the Mustangs took game two 160-147 setting up for one game to decide a winner. The Cougars started the third game slow but put the pressure on late. Forcing Morningside to strike in the first ball of the 10
th frame, the Mustangs answered the call with a key strike to seal the match winning 178-167.
The Cougars will take a week off before traveling back to St. Charles for Missouri Baptist's Clash of the Spartans.
