MORAVIA, Iowa — The Columbia College men's golf team placed fifth at the Statesmen at the Preserve on Tuesday, finishing 19 strokes behind champion Hastings. Payton Strattman and Alvaro Alegria each tied for seventh with a three-round total of 214. Alegria also recorded a hole in one on the ninth hole during day one of the tournament.

Columbia finished with a three-round total of 872 (288, 287, 297). Hastings won the team title at 853, with Morningside second at 857 and Missouri Valley third at 863. William Penn (A) took fourth at 867, and Mount Mercy (Iowa) placed sixth at 878. The Cougars were third after the first round, then held fifth place the rest of the way, finishing six strokes ahead of Mount Mercy.

Morningside's Ariel Lev won the individual title at 205 (68, 69, 68), one stroke ahead of Hastings' Taiki Sugawara. Competing as individuals, Payton Strattman and Alvaro Alegria both tied for seventh at 214, the best finishes of any Cougar. Strattman shot 72, 70 and 72. Alegria opened with a 72, followed with a 69 in the second round and closed with a 73.

Mabe tied for ninth at 215 (70, 70, 75), posting the best opening round of any Columbia scorer. Tom Clarens tied for 13th at 217 (72, 72, 73), and Bruno Marti Jimenez tied for 25th at 221 (72, 73, 76). Blake Sykes tied for 32nd at 222, closing with a 73 after a 75 in the second round, and Blake Hartner tied for 37th at 225 (74, 72, 79).

The Cougars return to action at Battle at Winter Creek in Oklahoma on Oct. 12-13.
