Southy Building

The Southy Building

The Southy Building, connected to the north end of the Southwell Complex, is the home of the training and academic centers. It consists of 1,000 square foot Athletic Training Room, the fitness center, the turf room, athletic offices and the Student-Athlete Resource Center.

In the summer of 2010 the Southy building went through major renovation. The south wall was knocked out to create room for a 3,000 square foot connector to be built, connecting the Southy building to the Southwell Complex. The additional space made room for an expanded fitness center now known as The Gene and Fran Koepke Fitness Center. Available to all Columbia College students, faculty and staff, the Gene and Fran Koepke fitness center features a wide array of aerobic and weight-training equipment, all brand new in 2010. The center also features 10 flat panel TV's and audio capabilities for all aerobic equipment.

The Turf Room

Two indoor batting cages and an artificial turf workout area are also located in the Southy Building. The Turf Room, used mainly by the Cougar softball and soccer teams, is also available to all Columbia College students, faculty and staff and was also renovated last summer with new turf, batting cages and lighting.

The Athletic Training Room

Just to the west of the fitness center sits the athletic training room. Certified athletic trainer Jon Barfknecht and his student staff supervise the athletic training room on a daily basis to evaluate, treat and rehabilitate athletes from injuries. Completely remodeled in the summer of 2010, the athletic training room features a mud room for hot and cold whirlpool therapy, a new taping station and additional space for rehabilitation.

The Southy Building houses the offices of Assistant Athletic Director Bryan Curtis, certified Athletic Trainer Jon Barfknecht, Assistant Athletic Trainer Rochelle Hamm, Softball Coach Wendy Spratt, Women’s Assistant Basketball Coach and Communication Assistant Taylor Possail.

In the summer of 2000, the foyer of the Southy Building was renovated along with Athletic Director and Men's Head Basketball Coach Bob Burchard's office to include a new office space for the Coordinator of Athletic Services Kim Kliegel.  The renovated foyer also includes the office of Associate Director of Athletics Cindy Potter.
