Box Score Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar men's soccer team lost in overtime to conference rival Park (Mo.) University by a score of 2-1 on Thursday night. The Pirates scored a last-second goal in the first overtime period to improve to 7-5 overall and 5-2 in the American Midwest Conference. The loss drops Columbia, ranked 15th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, to 9-3-3 overall and 6-1-2 in league play.
The Cougars got on the board in the 15
th minute of the first half on a perfectly played cross from
Antonio Ayres to
Inaki Suarez. Park would draw even with a goal in the 32
nd minute and the two teams would head to the halftime break tied at 1-1. Both sides threatened on offense with a combined eight shots during the final period, but both defenses were up to the task to send the match into overtime. With the clock winding down in the first overtime frame, the Pirates gained possession with less than 20 seconds remaining. Park's George Kennedy slipped behind the Columbia defense and took a cross in the box to bring
Matt McKenna out of the goal. Kennedy's shot attempt would go just wide off the right post, but Kiel Williams was in position to kick in the game-winner as time expired.
McKenna suffered the tough-luck loss and had one save in goal for the Cougars, who finished with a 12-11 shot advantage in the match.
Columbia will wrap up the week on Saturday, October 19
th when they host seventh-ranked Ashford (Iowa) University. The Cougars and Saints will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Soccer Stadium.
