Box Score Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar volleyball team defeated crosstown opponent Stephens (Mo.) College 3-0 on Tuesday night in the two teams' second matchup of the2013 season. Columbia earned a 3-1 victory in the two teams' first meeting of the year back on September 9
th. The Cougars, ranked 22
nd in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, improve to 13-4 overall on the season with the victory.
Columbia led 10-2 early in the first game of the night and cruised to a 25-8 win and a 1-0 lead in the match. The Cougars faced little resistance from the Stars during the final two games and won by double digits in both sets (25-11, 25-15) to close out the match.
Sarah Schwentker had a match-high 13 kills to lead a Columbia attack that finished with 41 kills and a .466 hitting percentage on the night.
Paula Rosa led all players with 11 digs and
Lydie van Deursen dished out 31 assists.
Wednesday night's victory also marked Cougar head coach
Melinda Wrye-Washington's 600
th win in her volleyball coaching career. Through her 14 seasons with Columbia, Washington has posted a school record 530 victories and .891 winning percentage. Prior to taking over the Cougar program in 2000, she spent three seasons at NCAA Division III Westminster (Mo.) College, where she accumulated 70 wins and just 19 losses from 1997-1999.
Columbia will return home to host 15
th-ranked Missouri Baptist University (18-1, 5-0) on Tuesday, October 8
th in a key matchup of two of the top teams in the AMC. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Arena of Southwell Complex. The Cougars will also host an alumni game this Saturday, October 5
th, as part of Columbia College's 2013 Homecoming and Family Day.
