Box Score Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar men's soccer team earned a 4-2 conference victory over Mid-Continent (Ky.) University on Saturday afternoon at R. Marvin Owens Soccer Stadium. Columbia, ranked 20
th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, improves to 8-2-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) with the win, their fourth straight dating back to September 24
th.
Both squads were forced to adjust to sloppy field conditions to begin the contest, but the Cougars would eventually strike first on a goal by
Zac Walters in the 29
th minute.
Dale McCormack converted a free kick less than two minutes later for a 2-0 Columbia advantage and
Rafael Ramos capped off the first half scoring with a goal in the 41
st minute on a cross by
Antonio Ayres. Following the halftime break, Mid-Continent pulled within a goal at 3-2 with a pair of scores in the 66
th and 79
th minutes. However, the Cougar defense held on down the stretch and
Zach Oppland headed in a goal in the final minutes to put the game away.
Mid-Continent ended up with a 17-11 advantage in shots on the afternoon, but AMC Defensive Player of the Week
Matt McKenna earned the victory in goal with seven saves.
Columbia will host William Woods (Mo.) University on Tuesday, October 8
th in another key AMC matchup. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will follow the Cougar women's game.
