Cougars roll to fifth straight win

Box Score Columbia, Mo. - The 22nd-ranked Cougar volleyball team defeated American Midwest Conference (AMC) opponent Harris-Stowe State University 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-13) on Wednesday night at the Arena of Southwell Complex. Columbia improves to 15-5 overall and 5-1 in AMC play with the victory, their fifth straight dating back to October 1st.

The Cougars claimed eight of the first ten points in the opening game of the night and built a quick double-digit lead on their way to a 25-8 win. Carol Berger led Columbia with four kills in the set. In game two, the Cougars used an 8-0 run midway through to grab a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-13 victory. Columbia faced little resistance in the final game of the night and jumped out to a 14-5 lead, before closing the game on a 4-0 run for a 25-13 win.

The Cougars finished the match with 41 kills, led by 11 kills from Trinity Ojo. Joana Alvarez led all players with 20 assists and Shelby Gordon had six digs for Columbia.

The Cougars will travel to St. Louis, Mo. for the Spartan Invitational (hosted by Missouri Baptist University) on Friday, October 11th and Saturday, October 12th. Columbia will kick off the weekend with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Friends (Kan.) University on Friday, followed by a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Trinity International University later that night. The Cougars' match on Saturday vs. Grand View (Iowa) University has been nominated for the NAIA Volleyball Match of the Week.
