Lady Cougars suffer first AMC loss

Box Score Henderson, Tenn. - The Lady Cougar basketball saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as second-ranked Freed-Hardeman University rolled to a 95-68 home win in the two teams' first meeting since 2010. With the loss, Columbia drops to 12-5 overall and 8-1 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC). The Lions improve to 17-0 (9-0 AMC) in their first season as a member of the conference.

Freed-Hardeman, who entered Saturday's matchup ranked in the top 15 nationally in both scoring offense and defense, scored eight straight points to open the first half and built an early 21-8 lead at the 11:48 mark. The Lions continued to control the game over the remainder of the period and took a 50-24 advantage into the halftime break after connecting on seven three-pointers in the half. Two days after scoring 113 points and shooting 58 percent against Stephens, the Lady Cougars struggled offensively at 26 percent from the field and also committed 12 turnovers in the opening period. Freed-Hardeman led by double digits throughout the second half and led by as many as 34 on their way to the lopsided victory.

Corri Hamilton finished with a career-high 16 points to lead Columbia, who shot a season-low 34 percent from the floor and tied a season-high with 25 turnovers on the afternoon. The Lions had four players in double figures for the game, led by Taleeah Cross with a game-high 29 points.

The Lady Cougars will return home to host Benedictine University-Springfield on Thursday, January 23rd and will follow that up with a home matchup vs. Missouri Baptist University on Saturday, January 25th. Thursday's game will also be part of the annual Suits and Sneakers event to benefit Coaches vs Cancer. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
