Cougar Women Fall to William Woods in Semifinal Round

Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar women's soccer team fell to William Woods University in the semifinal round of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) tournament tonight by a score of 1-0. Columbia, the tournament's top seed, drops to 11-6-1 overall. The Owls improve to 12-6-2 and face Missouri Baptist University in the AMC tournament championship on November 13th.

William Woods wasted little time getting on the board after Jamie Palermo headed in a perfectly played corner kick from Ashley Deckard less than two minutes into play to give the Owls an early 1-0 lead. Columbia had the chance to knot the score 1-1 in the 25th minute after earning a corner kick. Katelyn Palmer sent a ball into the goal that hit the Woods defender and bounced out. Both defenses tightened up over the remainder of the half as the two squads combined for seven shots in the opening period, with the Owls taking a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break

The Cougars outshot Woods 4-3 in the first half and 10-5 for the game, but were unable to come up with an equalizer as William Woods held on for the shutout.

Columbia receives an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament after clinching first place in the American Midwest Conference regular season. The Cougars will learn their fate for the opening round of the NAIA National Championship on Monday, November 17th.
