Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia men's basketball team remained unbeaten with a 68-37 home win over conference foe Williams Baptist College today. The Cougars, ranked seventh in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, improve to 6-0 overall on the season and 2-0 in American Midwest Conference (AMC) play with the victory while the Eagles fall to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Cougars built a double-digit lead midway through the first period as
Jobe Dillard knocked down a three-pointer to put Columbia up 17-5 at the 13:40 mark. Columbia would maintain the lead over the remainder of the half and take a 36-19 advantage into the locker room at halftime. The Cougars outrebounded the Eagles 21-17 in the opening period, while shooting 46 percent from the field and holding Williams Baptist to a 30 percent clip.
Malik Ray and
Tanner Sutton led the first half with seven points apiece. The Cougars would stretch their lead out to 21 to begin the second half and led by as many as 31 on their way to their sixth straight win.
Columbia finished the game at 43 percent from the field led by a season-high fifteen points and six rebounds from
Malik Ray.
Jeremy Nolen chipped in 11 points and pulled down four rebounds as Columbia finished with a 52-41 advantage on the boards.
Travis Vogt and
Tanner Sutton handed out a game-high four assists apeice.
Today's victory marks senior
Tanner Sutton's 100
th win in his four years at Columbia College. Few collegiate basketball players at any level have won more than 100 games in a four-year career. Thirteen former Columbia College men's basketball standouts have won more than 100 games in their respective careers as Cougars. During Sutton's time at Columbia College, he has averaged 6.8 points, 1.6 assists, and 1.8 rebounds a game. Through Suttons first three seasons, the Cougars have averaged 31 victories a year. Tanner is on pace to surpass former teammates
Wendell Crowder and
Devin Griffin's 120 all-time win mark set last season.
The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday, November 25
th to host Missouri Valley. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Arena of Southwell Complex. Prior to the game on Tuesday, Tanner will be recognized for his accomplishment.
