Columbia, Mo. - The 20
th-ranked Women's Cougar basketball team returned to action today, earning a 92-70 home victory over conference foe Williams Baptist College. With the win, Columbia improves to 4-1 overall on the year and 2-0 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) while the Eagles fall to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the first half asÂ
Ashley Fisher and Aqua Corpening knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the opening minutes. The Eagles used a 13-3 run over the next five minutes to grab their first lead of the game and led 14-13 with 12:53 remaining in the first period. After four lead changes, Columbia was able to gain some separation stretching their lead to 36-28 and would carry the advantage into the halftime break despite shooting 24 percent from the field in the frame.
Corri Hamilton led the Cougars with eight points and five rebounds.
Columbia found their grove in the second half starting with a 15-2 run with the help of
Tierney Seifert and Corpening after back-to-back three-pointers to give the Cougars their largest lead of the game at 51-30. The Cougars continued to dominate throughout the second half, stretching their lead out to 25 at the 2:00 mark. Columbia hit 19 of 37 attempts from the field in the final period to finish at 39 percent for the game.
Fisher notched her first double-double of the year with a game-high 24 points after hitting 4 of 7 from three-point range and matched a personal best 11 rebounds. Hamilton would also finish with her first double-double of the season ending with 21 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Corpening chipped in a career high 21 points while Seifert added a season high 10 points and six assists.
The Cougars will be back on their home court to host Central Methodist University on Monday, November 24
th. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
