Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia Cougar women fell to University of the Cumberlands tonight 68-57 in the second day of the Cougars vs. Cancer Classic presented by Cost Cutters to go 1-1 in the two-day event. The Lady Cougars, ranked No. 20 in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, are 2-1 on the season. Cumberlands improves to 2-0 overall.
Cumberlands used four three-pointers and a 21-15 rebounding advantage to take a six point lead into the halftime break, 34-28. Despite eight first-half points from
Amber Percival, the Cougars shot just 29 percent from the field and 2 of 10 (20 percent) from three-point range in the opening period. The Patriots continued to control the game, leading by double digits throughout the second half and led by as many as 14 on their way to the lopsided victory.
Three Cougars finished the game in double digits including
Corri Hamilton with a career high 18 points.
Aqua Corpening contributed 12 points for Columbia while
Amber Percival added ten points.
Kayla Washington pulled down a game high nine rebounds while
Brittany Yost and
Tierney Seifert handed out five assists apiece. Columbia owned a 42-35 rebounding advantage, but hit just 17 of 59 attempts from the field compared to 22 of 50 (44 percent) for the Patriots.
Following the final contest of the evening, a five-member all-classic team, as well as a most valuable player for the women, was recognized. Members of the women's squad include, from William Woods, Nia Lateju. From Columbia College,
Aqua Corpening and
Corri Hamilton were recognized as well as Lauren Ulrich from Bethel College. From the University of the Cumberlands, Brooke Forsythe was named to the all-classic squad and LaTeesha DeLoach earned most valuable player accolades.
The Lady Cougars return to the hardwood on Thursday, November 20
th when they travel to Hannibal, Mo. for a 5:30 p.m. contest with Hannibal-LaGrange University.
