Box Score Columbia, Mo. - The 12
th-ranked Lady Cougar basketball team closed out the regular season with a 91-61 home victory over conference opponent Missouri Baptist University on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Columbia finishes the 2013-14 regular season with a record of 24-6 and 20-2 mark in conference play.
The Lady Cougars led from the opening tip and used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to build a double-digit lead over the remainder of the frame. Columbia shot 50 percent from the field and outrebounded the Spartans 25-13 in the opening period for a 51-35 halftime advantage.
Janairrika Bland and
Ashley Fisher led the Lady Cougars with 12 points apiece at the break. Columbia scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 58-35 lead as they rolled to their 12
th win 13 games.
The Lady Cougars shot 50 percent for the game and had four players in double figures, led by Fisher with 18 points.
Aqua Corpening added 15 points and Bland and
Heather English added 14 each. Prior to Saturday's game, English and fellow senior
Laurel Wichmann were recognized for Senior Day.
Columbia will be idle until Wednesday, March 6
th when they host one of four American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament quarterfinal games. The Lady Cougars will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament after finishing second in the conference regular season standings behind Freed-Hardeman University (29-1, 21-1 AMC). Columbia will face the winner of Monday's opening round game between the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds. Tip-off for Wednesday's contest is set for 7:00 pm at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
