Walnut Ridge, Ark. - The 24
th-ranked Cougar women's basketball team returned to action Saturday afternoon, earning a 93-54 road victory over conference foe Williams Baptist College. With the win, Columbia improves to 15-5 overall and 11-3 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) while the Eagles fall to 8-11 on the year and 7-7 in league play.
Columbia wasted little time in taking control of the game, racing out to a 26-5 lead midway through the half. Columbia continued to dominate and stretched its lead out to 36-16 at the halftime break after shooting 41 percent from the field and knocking down 14 of 18 free throws in the first period. The Cougars also converted eight offensive rebounds into 14 second chance points in the frame, while forcing 14 turnovers by the Eagles.
Ashley Fisher and
Caprese Marshall led the way for Columbia in the opening frame with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Columbia led by as many as 40 points throughout the final period as they cruised to victory.
Fisher led five Cougars in double figures with 24 points to go along with a season-high 17 points from Marshall, 16 from
Aqua Corpening, 15 from
Corri Hamilton and 11 from
Amber Percival. Fisher pulled down a game-high nine rebounds while
Kei'yana Pearson gave out a game-high six assists. For the game, the Cougars shot 42 percent from the field while holding the lady Eagles to just 35 percent shooting and forcing 21 turnovers.
The Cougars will return home to host AMC member Lyon College on Thursday, January 29
th at 5:30 p.m. Lyon defeated the Cougars 64-61 on the road in their last meeting back on December 4
th. Thursday's contest is set for a 5:30 pm start in the Arena of Southwell Complex.
