Cougar Men’s Soccer Upsets No. 10 Lyon to Remain Perfect in AMC

Columbia, Mo. – The Cougar men's soccer team defeated 10th-ranked Lyon College 1-0 today in an American Midwest Conference (AMC) match up, extending their winning streak to eight games. With the win, Columbia improves to 11-2 on the year and 6-0 in AMC play while the Scots fall to 9-1-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in conference play.

After 30 minutes of scoreless play, Mitchell Conning notched his team leading eighth goal of the season as he worked his way around the Lyon goalkeeper to find the net giving the Cougars the 1-0 advantage. Vadim Cojocov picked up his second assist of the year on the goal.

The 1-0 score would remain headed into the halftime break with the Cougars outshooting the Scots 11-1, putting four on the net.

The Cougars missed a chance to extend their lead, when Mark Steiniger slid in, putting the ball in the net, but the goal was waved off due to Steiniger being offside with four and a half minutes remaining in the game. Both teams continued to pressure one another, but couldn't find the net as the Cougars held on for the 1-0 win.

Iain McTurk (9-0) recorded the win in goal for Columbia, posting three saves in the shutout, Columbia's eighth of the season. Lyon posted seven shots (three on-goal) for the match, compared to 20 shots (eight on-goal) on the day for the Cougars.

The Cougars will return to action Wednesday, October 14th when they host Park University. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field.
