Cougar Volleyball Goes 4-0 on the Weekend; Defeats No. 3 Missouri Baptist

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 10 ranked Columbia Cougar volleyball squad earned two victories for the second straight day to go 4-0 at the Spartan Invitational this weekend. The Cougars posted a 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 25-23) victory over Faulkner University and finished the day with a 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-17, 25-16) match win over No. 3 Missouri Baptist University in the NAIA Game of the Week. The Cougars are now 17-5 on the season.

In the first match of the day, Penny Liu recorded her sixth double-double of the year, tallying 20 kills and 15 digs. Maria Franco and Amber Graham also finished with double digit kills, chipping in 14 and 10, respectively. Sashiko Heredia dished out 45 assists and Mikah Simpson had a career-high 27 digs.

In the NAIA Game of the Week, the Cougars came back for revenge after last Wednesday's 3-2 match ended in the Spartans favor.

Both teams kept things close it set one, but with the score tied at 19, two errors by MBU and a kill by Liu would put the Cougars up 22-19. The Spartans never led from there and another kill by Liu and two errors allowed Columbia to take the 25-22 set win.

The Cougars never led in set two, as the Spartans tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 set victory.

In set three, Columbia raced out to a 10-4 lead and led 18-9 midway through the game. MBU worked to cut the deficit, but couldn't get the job done as the Cougars took set three by a score of 25-17.

Set four was tightly contested to begin the game. However, with the score tied at 15, the Cougars reeled off a 10-1 run to end the game, winning the match 3-1. Five Spartan errors, two kills by Liu and Eirini Chatziefstratiadou, and one kill by Polina Severina aided in the run.

The Cougars finished with 51 kills for a 0.266 hitting efficiency while holding the Spartans to a 0.162 hitting percentage. Liu ended with her second double-double of the day and seventh of the season, notching a season-high 21 kills and 14 digs to lead all players. Graham finished with 11 kills and Heredia handed out 43 assists. Sasha Robinson and Simpson both finished with double digit digs with 12 and 11, respectively.

Following the tournament, Heredia, Liu, and Simpson were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Cougars will return to the court Tuesday, October 13th when they host AMC foe William Woods University. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the arena of Southwell Complex.
