Volleyball Splits on Day One of Boneyard Brawl, Wrye-Washington Collects Win No. 600

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Georgetown, Ky. – The 5th-ranked Cougar volleyball defeated St. Catharine University 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-17 and 25-16) this afternoon before falling to 18th ranked Georgetown College in five sets (25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 25-27, and 11-15) on day one of the 2015 Boneyard Brawl. The split moves the Cougars overall record to 20-6.

After stumbling in the opening game the Cougars got back on track against St. Catharine and cruised in the final three games. Penny Liu recorded her eighth double-double of the year, tallying 22 kills and 14 digs to lead the Cougars. Eirini Chatziefstratiadou chipped in 18 kills of her own while Maria Franco and Amber Graham notched 10 apiece. Sashiko Heredia fed the offense with 56 total assists and 11 digs while Mikah Simpson finished with a team-high 23 digs.

In set one against the Tigers, Columbia used an 8-1 run midway through to easily take the first game 25-18. The Tigers rebounded back in set two, winning 25-22 to tie the match at one apiece.

With the score tied at 10 in set three, Columbia scored four straight points with the help of two service aces by Heredia and back-to-back kills by Liu and never trailed from there. The Tigers worked to erase the deficit, pulling within two at 19-17, but the Cougars scored six of the next eight points go ahead 2-1 in the match.

The Tigers led 19-14 after using 10-2 run midway through set four. From there Columbia reeled off a 10-1 run to go ahead 24-20 looking to put the game away. A Cougar service error gave the ball back to the Tigers who then scored three more points to tie the game back up at 24. The two teams traded point for point but two kills by Georgetown allowed the Tigers to pull away with the 27-25 fourth set win, forcing a fifth and deciding game.

With the score tied at six in the fifth set, the Tigers scored six unanswered points to go ahead 12-6. The Cougars tried to fight their way back, but couldn't do so as the Tigers captured the 3-2 match win.

Liu led the Cougar offense again in the second match, posting her second double-double of the day with 25 kills and 14 digs. Graham also finished in double-digit kills, chipping in 11. Heredia led the match with 45 assists to go along with 13 digs and three service aces while Simpson led all players with 19 digs.

With today's win over St. Catharine, Cougar head coach Melinda Wrye-Washington reached a milestone at Columbia College. In 15 seasons as head coach Wrye-Washington has amassed 600 wins, making her the all-time winningest volleyball coach at Columbia College. With Columbia's 20-6 record this season, Wrye-Washington now stands at 600-86 and brings her career record to 670-105.

Wrye-Washington has led the team to 12 American Midwest Conference tournament championships, 15 consecutive national tournament appearances, and one National Championship. In addition, she was named AMC Coach of the Year on 10 occasions and was coined Region Five Coach of the Year five different times.

The Cougars continue action in the Boneyard Brawl tomorrow when they face No. 7 Viterbo University (Wisc.) at 10:00 a.m. and No. 23 Indiana Wesleyan University at 1:00 p.m.
