Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar men's soccer team, ranked No. 9 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll released today, dropped a heartbreaker to visiting Lindenwood University-Belleville 1-0 in overtime on Tuesday night in the semifinals of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Postseason Tournament. Columbia falls to 17-3 on the year with the defeat. The loss also breaks Columbia's 14 game winning streak.
The game remained scoreless heading in the halftime break with the Lynx outshooting the Cougars 6 (four shots-on-goal) to 4 (two shots-on-goal).
The Lynx's Jose Silva came the closest to finding the net in the 20
th minute, as he rifled a shot in goal, but the ball would ricochet off of the crossbar, keeping the visitors off of the board.
The game remained aggressive throughout the second half as both teams applied tremendous pressure on one another, tallying four shots each, but still couldn't break through, sending the game into overtime.
Four minutes into overtime, Oriel Morego broke through, allowing the Lynx to pull away with the win.
The Lynx outshot the Cougars 12-8 in the match and held an 8-4 advantage in shots-on-goal. Junior keeper
Iain McTurk was handed his first loss of the season and posted seven saves.
The Cougar men's soccer team moved up one spot to No. 9 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, released by the national office on Tuesday.
Rio Grande (Ohio) is the unanimous No. 1 pick for the fourth-consecutive installment after gathering 529 points. For the fourth-straight week, Oklahoma Wesleyan recorded the second position with 512 points. With 493 points, No. 3 Baker (Kan.) claims its highest ranking this year. Defending national champion and fourth-ranked Davenport (Mich.) is trying to become the first team to be ranked preseason No. 1 and win the national championship in the same season since Lindsey Wilson did it in 2001. Missouri Valley claims the No. 5 position for the third-straight week.
AMC opponent Lyon College also appears in the top-25 at No. 21.
As the AMC regular season champions Columbia will advance to the first round of the national tournament on November 21
st. Information for opening round pairings will be announced on November 16
