Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's basketball team defeated American Midwest Conference (AMC) foe Lyon College this afternoon by a score of 63-51, extending their current winning streak to six games. With the victory, Columbia College improves to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The 17
th-ranked Scots fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Lyon knocked down a three to begin the game, but Columbia scored eight straight points to go ahead 8-3. The Scots used a run of their own to grab a quick 10-9 advantage, but an 8-3 run by the Cougars would allow the squad to lead 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Morgan Brandt drained a three to begin the second quarter as the Cougars used a 9-2 run to gain even more separation, making the score 26-15. Seven straight points by the Scots would cut the deficit to three points, but the Cougars extended their lead back out and would carry a 30-25 advantage into the halftime break.
Columbia shot 44 percent in the half while holding the 17
th-ranked Scots to 39 percent shooting.
An 8-2 run by Lyon pulled the visitors within two and would eventually allow them to pull ahead of the Cougars, 39-37. However, a spin move to the basket by
Martha Imoniana would tie the score at 39 with the third quarter gone.
The two teams traded points to begin the last quarter as the score would be tied two more times, but the Cougars reeled off a 12-2 run to grab a 55-47 lead. With the clock winding down, the Scots looked to put something together, but couldn't do so as Columbia finished on an 8-1 run to pick up the 63-51 victory.
The Cougars finished the day shooting 41 percent while the Scots shot 40 percent for the game. Columbia also held a 34-30 advantage on the glass.
Corri Hamilton led the team with 13 points and 10 rebounds to post her third double-double of the season.
Petrolina Chilaka and
Ashlee Marlatt also finished in double digit points with 10 apiece.
The Cougars travel to Baker University Saturday, November 28
th for their next contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Baldwin City, Kan.
