Women’s Soccer Advances to AMC Championship Game with Win over Lynx

Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar women's soccer team advanced to the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament championship with a 6-0 semifinal victory over Lindenwood University-Belleville on Monday night. Columbia, the tournament's top seed, moves their overall record to 17-3 on the year and improves their latest winning streak to 10 games.

The Cougars did what they've done all season and jumped ahead early as Amy Bolton swung the ball left to Tiffany Weaver who then buried a shot 18 yards out into the lower left corner of the net seven minutes into the game.

Christina Conley added a second goal in the 23rd minute, her 4th of the year, after working her way through traffic to put it home to give the Cougars the 2-0 advantage over the Lynx. Jordan Poire was credited with the assist on the play.

Weaver struck again in the 34th minute to extend the Cougar lead to 3-0 after connecting with Katelyn Palmer and Kelli Westhues. The goal marks Weaver's 15th goal of the season.

Less than four minutes later, Westhues headed in two goals of her own within one minute to give the Cougars a commanding 5-0 lead. The first goal came after a perfect cross by Weaver and the second also came from Weaver as she struck the ball and hit the cross bar which then hit the head of Westhues.

Lindenwood-Belleville's Jessika Stiehr had the first and only shot-on-goal of the half in the 27th minute, but Cougar goalkeeper Flavia Rosado came up with the save to keep the Lynx off of the board.

Columbia carried the 5-0 lead into the break as they outshot the Lynx 19-3 in the first half, putting 12 on the net.

AMC Offensive Player of the Week, Laurie Frew, made history in the 51st minute as she blasted a shot in the goal, tying the all-time goals in a season record, held by Stephanie Hale in 2013, with her 23rd of the year. The Lynx continued to apply pressure in the second half as they outshot the Cougars eight to six, but couldn't find the net as the Cougars captured the win.

The Cougars outshot the Lynx 25-11 for the game. Flavia Rosado (17-3) earned the win in goal for Columbia, posting four saves.

Columbia will host No. 2 seed Park University on Thursday, November 12th with a chance to claim the program's second AMC Tournament championship in their four years of existence. The Cougars defeated the Pirates 4-0 in their regular season meeting back on October 14th. Match time is set for 6:00 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field.
