Owls Take Season Series, 66-59

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's basketball team fell to William Woods University in their last regular season game by a score of 59-66 on Thursday night. With the loss, Columbia finishes the 2014-15 regular season with a record of 19-10 and 15-8 mark in conference play.

The scoring got off to a slow start as the Cougars led 10-7 midway through the first half with the Owls first five points coming from the charity stripe. From there Columbia used a 6-2 run to go ahead 16-9. William Woods responded with a three and a basket in the paint to pull within two at 16-14 at the 8:13 mark. Columbia reeled off a 7-0 run over the next four minutes to push their lead to nine, but the Owls broke the run after converting the three point play to make it 23-17 with 4:48 left in the half. Aqua Corpening knocked down a three-pointer at the 3:28 minute mark to help the Cougars outscore the Owls 5-2 to make it 28-19. William Woods held Columbia scoreless over the remaining three minutes, but the Cougars were able take a 28-22 lead into the halftime break. Corri Hamilton posted an astonishing 10 points and 12 rebounds in the first half.

The teams traded baskets to begin the second half, but the Owls would use an 8-0 from there to go up 34-30 with five minutes gone in the half. Three straight points from the Cougars would cut the deficit to one, but William Woods responded with two shots in the paint to make it 38-33. Columbia scored on their next two possessions to make it 38-37. The two teams traded basket for basket over the next minute as the Owls held onto the lead at 40-39. William Woods used a 8-3 run over the next four minutes to go up 48-42, but the Cougars scored the next six points to tie the game at 48 with 4:56 left in the game. The Owls used a 7-2 to extend their lead back out at 55-50 with less than two minutes to play, but the Cougars kept it close outscoring the Owls 4-2 to make it 57-54 with 1:09 remaining. Columbia threw a foul where the Owls took advantage of the line to go up 59-54, but Corpening came up big as she hit a three at the 1:01 mark to make it 59-57. A Columbia sent Kelsey Scherder to the line where she made one of two as the Cougars rebounded the ball and ran it up the court. The Cougars would turn the ball over with 31 second remaining as the Owls converted it into two points. With William Woods up 62-57, another foul was thrown where Kelsey Scherder sunk two of two to go up 64-57. Caprese Marshall hit a shot in the paint to make it 64-59, but William Woods would go to the line for the last time and put the game away.

The Cougars shot 28 percent for the game led by Corpening with 14 points. Hamilton posted a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 16 rebounds while five other Cougars broke the scoring column. Kayla Washington pulled down 11 rebounds to help Columbia finished with a 58-44 advantage on the boards.

The Owls shot 35 percent on the night led by Kennedy Volkart and Blake French with 16 points apiece.

Columbia will await the conclusion of the regular season play to see where they land in the post-season conference tournament bracket. Quarterfinal play will begin Wednesday, March 4th. Be sure to check the website for schedule updates.
