Columbia Softball Splits with Lyon, Face Freed-Hardeman on Friday

Batesville, Ark. – The Cougar Softball team split an American Midwest Conference (AMC) doubleheader with Lyon College this afternoon. Columbia dropped game one 5-2, but came back to win game two 6-0. With the split, the Cougars move to 7-8 overall on the year and 2-2 in conference play.

In game one, the Cougar offense got off to another fast start, as Carly Spalding led off with a base hit and then stole two bases to advance to third. She later came around to score on a groundout to give Columbia a 1-0 advantage. Lyon added one run in the second and three in the third while holding the Cougars scoreless to go up 4-1.

Columbia loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth inning and was able to push a run across on a fielding error by Lyon third baseman Stephanie Bagwell. The Scots answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of a misplayed ball in the infield for the 5-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

Columbia put runners on base as Spalding singled and Julianna Waldner followed with a double to center. With one out, Allyson Metz hit a deep ball to center where it was caught and Spalding was thrown out at the plate to end the rally.

Paxton Welch suffered the loss in the circle for the Cougars, allowing four runs on ten hits in six innings. Spalding finished with three of Columbia's eight hits in the game.

Waldner got the scoring started in game two as she slammed a two-run double in the top of the third to score Kaylee Brueggeman and Spalding. Columbia would push another run across in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Waldner for a 3-0 advantage. Waldner carried her hot hitting into the sixth as she ripped another two-run double and later came around to score on a double by Metz to give the Cougars the 6-0 advantage over the Scots.

Starting pitcher Amber Boehme retired the Scots in order in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to complete the shutout after allowing just one hit and striking out five. The Columbia offense finished with 13 hits, led by Waldner with three hits and five RBI.

The Cougars return to the field on Friday, March 20th when they face Freed-Hardeman University for their home opener. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 2:00 pm at Antimi Black Field in Columbia.
