Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia Cougar women's basketball team fell to top ranked Freed-Hardeman University this afternoon, 76-62, in the semifinal round of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) postseason tournament. The Cougars fall to 22-11 with the loss. The Lions improve their record to 31-1.
Both teams went back and forth to begin the second half as the Cougars trailed by one at 11-10 with the first five minutes gone. The Lions used an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to go up 22-12. Columbia cut the deficit to eight on a basket by
Kayla Washington. Freed-Hardeman maintained the eight point lead as the two teams traded points over the next minutes. The Cougars pulled within four at 32-28 with the help of 7-2 run with a little over two minutes to play, but the Lions scored four straight points to take the 36-28 lead into the halftime break. Columbia shot 39 percent in the first half led by
Aqua Corpening with nine points
Columbia kept things close to begin the second half, but the Lions pushed their lead to 12 at the 12:38 minute mark. The Cougars cut the deficit to nine, but Freed-Hardeman extended their lead back out to double-digits and led by as many as 17 on their way to victory.
The Cougars finished shooting 40 percent from the field led by Corpening with 24 points to go along with eight rebounds.
Corri Hamilton chipped in 13 points and five rebounds while
Ashley Fisher rounded out the scoring with 12 points. Grace Alonso de Armino had 31 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Lions who shot 39 percent from the field.
Columbia will await the conclusion of conference tournaments around the NAIA to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament. A list of this year's participating teams and pairings will be release on Wednesday, March 11.
