Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College softball team swept American Midwest Conference (AMC) opponent St. Louis College of Pharmacy this afternoon. The Cougars defeated the Eutectics 7-2 in game one and pounded out 15 hits in game two, winning 15-2 in five innings. Columbia improves to 25-16 overall on the season and finishes conference play with a mark of 16-8.
The Eutectics scored one run in the bottom of the first inning after back-to-back doubles for the early lead. The Cougars responded in the bottom of the frame with a run on an RBI single to left by senior
Taylor Atwood. Columbia would add another run in the second after junior
Kaylee Brueggeman doubled to score
Brittiany Tjarks who led off with a walk. Two more runs would come across the plate for the Cougars in the third inning as senior
Jessica Hardy blasted a two-run home run to put them up 4-1. Columbia tacked on three more runs in fifth inning on an RBI double by Tjarks and a two-run single from
Carly Spalding to complete the scoring for the Cougars. The Eutectics would add two runs in the top of the sixth on three hits, but would fail to make any kind of comeback.
Sophomore
Paxton Welch (12-7) earned the win in the circle after allowing one run on four hits and striking out two in five innings of work.
Tiffany Urwiler pitched two innings in relief and gave up two runs while striking out two. Hardy and Tjarks went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Cougar offense.
In game two, the Euts took another early lead with one run in the first inning. The Cougars answered back with six runs in the bottom of the first on six hits. Leadoff batter,
Carly Spalding got things going after she stroked a triple and scored on an RBI single by
Allyson Metz.
Rachel Sullivan added another run on an RBI single to score Metz. Tjarks would extend the Cougar's lead with a three-run bomb to dead center followed by a solo home run by
Samantha Davis.
The Eutectics would add a run in the second, but the Cougars would get it back on an RBI double by Spalding in the third inning. After a scoreless top of the fourth, Columbia's offense came alive as they scored eight runs on five hits to go up 15-2. The Cougars held the Eutectics scoreless in the fifth to run away with the win.
Amber Boehme (5-4) was credited the win after allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five. The Cougars finished with 15 hits led by Sullivan with three. Spalding, Stephens, Metz, and Davis chipped in two hits apiece as well.
The Cougars will wrap up regular season play this Friday, April 24
th when they travel to Kansas City, Mo. to take on Avila University. The first pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
