No. 5 Cougars Comeback Falls Short Against No. 9 Lyon

Box Score Batesville, Ark. – The 5th-ranked Columbia College women's basketball team couldn't fend off the 9th-ranked Lyon College Scots this afternoon in the NAIA Network Game of the Week, as the Cougars fell by a score of 72-65 on the road. The loss snaps the Cougars 19 game winning streak and moves the squad to 19-1 on the season and 13-1 in conference play. The Scots improve their latest winning streak to 14 games and are now 17-2 overall and 13-1 in league play.

The Cougars couldn't get things going against the number one defensive team in the country as they trailed 22-8 after one quarter of play.

Lyons' Jamie Jackson drained two threes in the opening minutes of the second quarter to extend their lead to 18 at 28-10. The Scots continued to lead by double-digits throughout the quarter until a 10-0 run by the Cougars cut the deficit to eight at 35-27 headed into the halftime break.

The Scots shot 54 percent in the half while the Cougars shot just 38 percent from the field. Jackson posted 14 first half points to lead Lyon and Corri Hamilton led Columbia with nine points.

The Cougars cut the Lyon lead to five two different times in the third quarter, but the Scots wouldn't allow Columbia to get any closer and led 55-46 at the end of the third quarter.

Carina Jackson scored a bucket to put Lyon ahead by 11 to begin the fourth quarter, but Kei'yana Pearson drained a three to pull Columbia back within eight. Ashlee Marlatt hit a three of her own at the 6:17 mark to make it a five point game at 59-54, but Sarah Elkins responded with back-to-back baskets to stretch the Lyon lead back out to nine. Columbia didn't back down as they used a 7-0 run, capped off by another three by Marlatt at the 2:05 minute mark to make the score 65-62. However, the Scots outscored the Cougars 7-3 over the final two minutes to hold on for the 72-65 win.

The Cougars finished shooting 42 percent (26/62) from the field while the Scots shot 51 percent (24/47). Lyon took advantage of 26 Cougar fouls to score 21 points but was outrebounded by Columbia, 36-33. Petrolina Chilaka led Columbia with 15 points while Hamilton chipped in 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Marlatt also finished in double-digits with 12 points.

Lyons' Jamie Jackson led all players with 23 points while Carina Jackson and Taylor Gaedtke finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Columbia will return to the court on Thursday, January 28th when they host AMC opponent Harris-Stowe State University. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
