Box Score 2 Des Moines, Iowa – The Columbia College volleyball team was back in action this afternoon with two matches to finish off their weekend at the Grand View Tournament. The Cougars took on #19 University of Jamestown (N.D.) in their first match and defeated the Jimmies in five sets (25-17, 22-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12). In their second match, Columbia College beat Wayland Baptist (Texas) University in five sets (26-24, 22-25, 25-9, 23-25, 15-11) to improve their overall record to 15-10 on the season.
In their first match of the day, the Cougars were able to defeat the 19
th ranked University of Jamestown (N.D.) Jimmies in five sets. Columbia College took the first set of the match by a score of 25-17. The Cougars had 16 kills on 24 attempts in the set. The Jimmies were able to bounce back in the match and took the next two sets over the Cougars. They took the second game by a score of 25-22 and held Columbia College to just eight kills on 37 attempts. They were able to use that momentum in the third set and defeated the Cougars 25-18 to go up 2-1 in the match.
The Cougars were able to claw their way back into the game in the fourth set and defeated the Jimmies by a score of 25-22. They had 12 kills in the set compared to 11 from the University of Jamestown. In the fifth and final set of the match, Columbia College was finally able to finish off the Jimmies. They took the final set by a score of 15-12 to complete the 3-2 victory. The Cougars were led by the AMC and NAIA Attacker of the Week,
Peiyi Liu, as she added to her streak of great games with a match high 19 kills and nine digs.
Maria Franco had 13 kills in the match and
Caroline Clifford added 12 kills for the Cougars as the offense had 59 total kills in the game.
Sashiko Heredia had a match high 54 assists in the contest.
The second match of the day against Wayland Baptist (Texas) University was very similar to the first. The Cougars took the first set of the game 26-24 after winning the last two points of the set with the score tied at 24. The Pioneers bounced back in the second set and defeated the Cougars 25-22 to tie the match at 1. Columbia College dominated the third set 25-9 to take the 2-1 lead in the match.
Columbia College came out in the fourth set looking to finish off the Pioneers. They were unable to hold off Wayland Baptist at the end of the game and were defeated by a score of 25-23. They were finally able to finish off the Pioneers in the fifth and final set by a score of 15-11 to finish off the weekend with a 2-2 record.
Peiyi Liu led the Cougars once again with a team high 24 kills and also had 15 digs in the contest.
Sami Meyer led the team defensively as she had a team high 21 digs in the game.
Sashiko Heredia also had another great game for the Cougars picking up 68 assists in the match.
The Cougars are back in action on Thursday, October 20
th when they travel to Parkville, Missouri, to take on seventh ranked Park University in an AMC matchup. This is a huge game for the Cougars as they look to get back into the conference title hunt. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
