Columbia, Mo. – Tonight the 21
st ranked Columbia College women's volleyball team took on Central Baptist (Ark.) College in an AMC contest. The Cougars are coming off their best weekend of the season when they went 4-0 at the 2016 Boneyard Brawl in Georgetown, Kentucky. Columbia College was able to beat two top 10 teams on Friday and followed that up by sweeping two unranked opponents on Saturday to improve to 21-11 on the season. For their efforts this weekend, the Cougars had three players make the all-tournament team including
Peiyi Liu, the NAIA and AMC Attacker of the Week, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Sashiko Heredia and
Eirini Chatziefstratiadou were also named to the team after both posted spectacular numbers over the weekend.
The Cougars were able to extend their winning streak to seven straight games after defeating the Mustangs in three straight sets (25-12, 25-8, 25- ). With the win tonight, the Cougars improved their overall record to 22-11 on the season and 9-2 in conference play.
In the first set of the match, the Cougars picked up two quick kills from
Zori Curry to jump out to an early 4-1 lead. Columbia College never let the Mustangs back in the game and cruised to 25-12 victory to take a one set lead over Central Baptist College. The Cougars were led by
Zori Curry and
Caroline Clifford who each had four kills in the set. The second set was very similar to the first with Columbia College using a 9-1 run to jump out to early lead over the Mustangs. The Cougars shut down Central Baptist's attack in the game and cruised to a 25-8 victory to take a two set lead in the match.
In the third set, the Cougars found themselves down 8-1 to start the game. The Cougars never let the Mustangs get out of reach and rallied back by going on an 18-1 run to take control of the set. Columbia College was able to use that momentum and finish off the three game sweep with a decisive 25-13 victory over Central Baptist.
The Cougars were led by
Eirini Chatziefstratiadou who had a match high 16 kills in the game. Columbia College played another great game defensively and had three players finish the match with double digit digs.
Sami Meyer continued her streak of great defensive play picking up a match high 15 digs in the contest. Additionally,
Sashiko Heredia, who had a match high 28 assists, and
Peiyi Liu each added 11 digs to 59 total accumulated by Columbia College.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow night, November 3
rd, when they take on Freed-Hardman (Tenn.) University in their final regular season game. This game will serve as senior night for Columbia College and before the game we will honor the seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
