Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the 13
th ranked Columbia College women's basketball team was back in action when they took on Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University in an AMC matchup. The Cougars were able to defeat the Trojans by a final score of 89-36 and improved to 10-1 on the season while extending their winning streak to six straight games.
In the first quarter of the game, the Cougars got off to a quick start when
Raegan Wieser found Mai Nienhauser under the basket for an easy layup on their first possession of the game. Columbia College played tough defense in the quarter and forced the Trojans to turn the ball over four times in the opening period. They held Hannibal-LaGrange scoreless for the first seven minutes of the quarter and held them to just four total points as the Cougars took a 16-4 lead into the second.
Columbia College came out firing in the second quarter and knocked down three shots from behind the arc to jumpstart a 15-5 run. The Trojans had a tough time getting anything going as the quarter progressed and found themselves down 44-18 at the halftime break. The Cougars finished the half with seven blocks and were led by
Jordan Alford who finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Cougars picked up right where they left off in the first half and dominated the Trojans from the opening possession in the second half. Hannibal-LaGrange did their best to get back into the game but Columbia's swarming defense and efficient offense were too much for the Trojans down the stretch. The Cougars ended the game with 10 blocked shots, 16 forced turnovers, and 10 steals to go along with an impressive 51.52 shooting percentage from the field.
Columbia College had several players finish in double figures including
Jordan Alford who had a game high 20 points. Additionally,
Ashlee Marlatt finished with 14 points,
Mai Nienhueser dropped in 13 points, and
Raegan Wieser finished with 14 points and added a game high 12 rebounds to round out the top performers for Columbia.
The Cougars are back in action on Thursday, December 15
th when they travel to Belleville, Illinois, to take on 23
rd ranked Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.) in an AMC matchup. The Lynx are currently 7-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. The game is set to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
