Cougars Down Competition on Day 2 of Cowtown Classic

Fort Worth, Texas- The Cougars dominated play on day two of the Cowtown Classic in Fort Worth, Texas as the squad shutout McPherson College 11-0 in five innings before run ruling No. 5 Central Methodist University by a score of 11-2. Columbia is now 5-0 on the young season.

The Cougars got off to a quick start in game one as they scored three runs in the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Rachel Sullivan and Allyson Metz put runners on with one out. Molly Carter followed with a single of her own to score Sullivan for the first run of the game. A grounder by Olivia Denslow would bring Metz around to score and a single to center by Lauren McCroskie allowed Carter to cross the plate for the early 3-0 advantage.

Columbia erupted for six runs in the top of the third on six hits, including two extra base hits. A single to left by Carter scored Sullivan who led the inning off with an infield base hit. Denslow then reached second base thanks to a throwing error by the Bulldogs and Carter would be able to score on the play. McCroskie followed with a single to left and advanced to third on yet another throwing error. Denslow crossed the plate on the wild throw. Julianna Waldner then stepped to the plate and ripped a triple that would bring McCroskie around to score. Dakota Newton stroked a double the next at bat, allowing Waldner to touch the plate. Kaylee Brueggeman brought in the last run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Newton.

The Cougars didn't stop there as they would add two more runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Kayla Fozzard and a sacrifice fly by Carter. Columbia held the Bulldogs scoreless from there and would run away with the 11-0 shutout win in five innings.

McCroskie earned her second victory of the season in the circle, holding the Bulldogs to just one hit and striking out four in five innings of work. She also paced the offense after going 3-for-3 with one RBI. Sullivan, Fozzard and Carter chipped in two hits apiece while Carter also recorded three RBI.

The Cougars did what they did all weekend long against the Eagles from CMU and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Denslow singled to right and Natalie Dummitt followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. Two wild pitches by CMU allowed Denslow to score and put Dummitt on third base. Newton then singled to center to bring Denslow across the plate. Newton eventually advanced to third due to back-to-back wild pitches and scored on a single by Spalding.

The Eagles responded with a run in the bottom of the second on a Columbia infield error.

Columbia tacked on three more runs in the third inning on three hits, highlighted by a two run triple by Waldner. The Cougars scored two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to extend their lead to 11-1 headed into the bottom of the inning. CMU was able to plate a run on a sacrifice fly by Mary Dahl in the fifth, but Columbia buckled down to get out of the inning, run ruling the fifth ranked team in the country.

Junior hurler Paxton Welch picked up her second win of the season after allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out three. Metz led the offensive attack after going 3-for-4 with three RBI while Spalding, Sullivan and Denslow had two hits apiece.
