Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College softball team split a pair of one run games with American Midwest Conference (AMC) foe Missouri Baptist University this afternoon at Antimi Softball Complex. The Cougars hung on to win the first game by a score of 1-0 before dropping game two 1-0 to the Spartans. The split moves to Cougars to 14-12 on the season and 6-6 in conference play.
In game one, Columbia struck for the lone run in the bottom of the first as
Rachel Sullivan singled and scored on a triple by
Molly Carter. The 1-0 score proved to be enough and would uphold throughout the rest of the game.
Junior hurler
Paxton Welch (6-7) shutout the Spartans over seven innings, while only allowing three hits and striking out two. Five different Cougars recorded a hit in the win including Sullivan, Carter,
Allyson Metz,
Natalie Dummitt, and
Olivia Denslow.
The Spartans notched the only run in game two as Chloe Jennings reached on a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then reached third on a wild pitch. Anderson then delivered a single to bring her home and put MBU ahead 1-0 in the first inning.
Columbia recorded seven hits and stranded seven runners in the loss. The Cougars had several chances to score, but couldn't string the offense together to get on the board.
Lauren McCroskie pitched the complete game and took the loss on the mound.
Kaylee Brueggeman led the offense with two hits while
Carly Spalding,
Julianna Waldner,
Dakota Newton, Sullivan and Carter had one hit apiece.
The Cougars will face No. 13 Southeastern University in a doubleheader on Monday, March 28
th in Lakeland, Fla. starting at 2:00 p.m.
