Box Score 2 Bourbonnais, Ill. – This afternoon the Columbia College women's volleyball team traveled to Bourbonnais, Illinois, to compete in the Olivet Nazarene Holiday Inn Express Invite Tournament. The Cougars were defeated in their first match of the day by the fifth ranked Viterbo (Wis.) University V-Hawks in three straight sets (28-26, 25-14, 25-14). Columbia College bounced back in the second game against Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) University and was able to defeat the Wolves in four sets (25-14, 19-25, 25-16, 25-12).
In the first set against Viterbo University, the Cougars were able to jump out to an early lead and hung with the V-Hawks throughout the set. However, the V-Hawks over matched the Cougars in the set finishing with 18 kills compared 15 from the Cougars.
The second set started off like the first with the Cougars jumping out to an early lead and matching point for point with the V-Hawks. With the score tied at eight, the V-Hawks went on a 7-1 run and never looked back cruising to a 25-14 victory.
The third set was all V-Hawks as they were able to start the set on a 5-1 run and then added a 12-1 run later in the game to take it 25-14. With the sweep, Viterbo University improves to 13-2 on the season.
Peiyi Liu led the Cougars with a match high 13 kills on a .357 attacking percentage. Heredia Sashiko had 25 assists in the match to lead Columbia College as the loss dropped their season record to 2-7.
In the second match against Cardinal Stritch University, the Cougars were able to go on a 5-1 run in the first set with the score tied at eight to solidify the 25-14 victory. Columbia College had nine kills in the set.
In the second set, the Cougars jumped out to an early 10-3 lead but were unable to hold off the wolves for the rest of the set. Cardinal Stritch went on an 11-2 run at the end of the game to take the game 25-19.
The Cougars were able to regain their composure in the third set as they got the 25-16 victory after going on a 9-2 run with the score tied at 14. Columbia College had nine kills in the set.
The fourth set was all Cougars as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead and never looked back. The Cougars finished on a 17-3 run to finish off the Wolves and improve their record to 3-7 on the season.
Liu led the way for Columbia College with a match high 17 kills on a .593 attacking percentage. Samantha Meyer added 10 digs and
Sashiko Heredia tacked on a match high 28 assists for the Cougars.
Columbia College is back in action tomorrow morning as they take on St. Xavier (Ill.) University and Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University in the final day of the tournament. Match times are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Bourbonnais, Illinois.
