Oskaloosa, Iowa – Tonight the seventh ranked Columbia College men's soccer team traveled to Oskaloosa, Iowa, to take on William Penn University. The Cougars fell to the Statesmen by a score of 2-1 in overtime to drop to 0-3-0 on the season. The Statesmen improve to 2-2-1 on the season.
Nenad Markovic opened up the scoring in the game when he received a ball from Anfernee Houston running up the sideline and was able to chip the Columbia keeper to make it 1-0 just 20 minutes into the first half for his fifth goal of the season.
Columbia College did not let the goal get to them as they controlled the possession for the rest of the half. The Cougars were able to tie the score at one just 15 minutes later when
Michael Mayberry received the ball in the middle of the field and took on several defenders before eventually sliding his shot past the Statesmen's keeper for his first goal of the season. Columbia College outshot William Penn 4-3 in the first half.
The Cougars came out hungry in the second half creating several scoring opportunities in the first five minutes. The best opportunity came when
Edin Campara won the ball in the back and played a long pass to
Michael Mayberry who was able to beat the keeper but was unable to get it past the Statesmen defender who knocked the ball out of bounds for a Columbia College corner kick.
Nenad Markovic had the game winner in overtime as he received a ball running up the sideline and was able to beat the Columbia College goalie to solidify the victory for the Statesmen.
Iain McTurk was in goal for the Cougars tonight recording two saves in the loss.
The Cougars are back on the road Friday, September 9
th as they travel to Olivet Nazarene University to take on Davenport (Mich.) University in Bourbonnais, Illinois. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
