Columbia, Mo. – Tonight the twelfth ranked Columbia College women's basketball team was back in action when they played host to Park (Mo.) University in an AMC matchup. The Cougars defeated the Pirates by a final score of 92-75 and improved to 14-3 on the season and 8-3 in conference play. With the loss, Park falls to 2-12 on the season and 2-9 in the AMC.
The Cougars came out in the first half and jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. They were able to use their size advantage over the Pirates and worked the ball inside which led to easy layup opportunities for the Cougars. Park had a tough time finding the holes in Columbia's zone defense and were held to just five field goals in the first quarter as they found themselves down 21-10 at the end of the period.
The Pirates bounced back quickly to start the second quarter and knocked down two straight three pointers to get back into the game. They switched up their game plan defensively and took away the inside forcing the Cougars to take shots from the outside. However, they were not falling for Columbia as the Cougars went 3-14 from behind the arc in the second quarter. The Pirates were able take advantage of Columbia's miscues and cut the Cougas lead down to six at the end of the half.
The second half started with both sides exchanging points on their first couple possessions. However, the Cougars were able to find their stride midway through the third quarter and went on an 11-4 run to take a 13 point lead over the Pirates. They continued to pressure Park on the defensive end of the floor and forced them to take tough shots down the final stretch of the game. The Pirates did their best to get back into the contest but the Cougars lead was too big for the Pirates to overcome and Columbia College cruised to their second win in a row.
The Cougars were led
Morgan Brandt and
Mai Nienhueser who both finished the game with a double-double. Brandt, who picked up her 300
th career rebound in tonight's game, finished with a career high 21 points and added 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Nienhueser, who recorded her first double-double as a Cougar, finished the game with 12 points and a career high 10 rebounds. In addition,
