Walnut Ridge, Ark. – This afternoon the sixth ranked Columbia College men's basketball team was back in action when they traveled to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, to take on Williams Baptist (Ark.) College in an AMC matchup. The Cougars were able to extend their winning streak to 10 straight games after defeating the Eagles by a final score of 66-60. With the win this afternoon, Columbia College improves to 16-1 on the season and 9-0 in conference play.
The Cougars came out in the first half and took it to the Eagles early on in the game. They were able to push the tempo and jumped out to an early 9-4 lead but Williams Baptist fought back and answered with a 16-5 run of their own to take a six point lead midway through the half. Columbia College was determined to not let the Eagles get too far ahead and battled back to tie the game at 24 with just over four minutes remaining in the period. However, the Cougars had a tough time finding the holes in the Eagles zone defense in the final minutes of the half and found themselves down 32-26 at the break. Columbia College was led by
Nathan Biggs who had a team high six points in the half.
In the second half, the Cougars looked to work the ball inside and find the openings the defense. They were able to score on their first possession of the half after working the ball around the perimeter before finding
Malik Ray under the basket who slammed the ball home to jumpstart a 12-8 run for Columbia. They continued to push the tempo and were finally able to catch up to the Eagles midway through the half and pushed their lead all the way to 10 after going on an 11-0 run. However, the Eagles bounced back quickly and brought the score down to two with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Both sides exchanged points down the final stretch of the contest but ultimately the Cougars were able to hold off the Eagles to remain undefeated in conference play.
Columbia College was led by
Nathan Biggs who had a game high 12 points for the Cougars. In addition to Biggs,
Travis Vogt finished with 10 points and
Malik Ray brought down a game high 11 rebounds to round out the top performers for Columbia.
The Cougars are back in action on Thursday, January 12
th when they take on Park (Mo.) University in an AMC contest. The game is set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. in the Southwell Athletic Complex.
