Box Score Columbia, Mo. – The 16th ranked Columbia College women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon as they traveled across town to face Stephens (Mo.) College in an AMC matchup. The Cougars defeated the Stars by a final score of 82-63 and improved to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
The game got off to a slow start as neither team could get their offense rolling until midway through the first quarter. The Cougars pressured the Stars early looking to get some quick turnovers. Columbia held just a two point lead with three and a half to go in the quarter before they went on a 12-0 run to extend their lead 24-10 to end the first quarter.
The Cougars carried their momentum into the second quarter as they remained in control of the game. Columbia headed into halftime leading 45-26. The Cougars shot 44 percent from the field, 45 percent from three, and 91 percent from the line in the first half.
The Stars came out of the halftime break trying to fight their way back into the game. Stephens cut the Cougars lead to 10 two times in the quarter, but that would be as close as they would get as the Cougars led 65-52 heading into the final quarter of play. Columbia used a 12-5 run to stretch their lead 77-57 with just under five minutes to go in the game. The Stars did their best to battle back, but Columbia would be too much to handle as they secured their second conference win of the season 82-63.
Geena Stephens recorded a career high 18 points as well as pulling down six rebounds. Sarah Walters (14), Morgan Brandt (12), and Ashlee Marlatt (11) also recorded double-digit points this afternoon. In addition, Marlatt dished out seven assists, while Alexis Uffmann handed out four in the contest.
The Cougars are back in action Friday, November 24th when they travel to Jackson, Tennessee to compete in the Jackson Rotary Invitational. They take on Shawnee State (Ohio) University at 2:00 p.m. on day one of the Invitational.
