Sioux City, Iowa – Tonight the ninth ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back in action as they continued pool play in the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championships. The Cougars, who were swept last night in three straight sets by Morningside (Iowa) College, were able to bounce back tonight as they improved to 34-7 on the season and 1-1 in pool play after defeating the Tabor (Kan.) College Bluejays in four sets (25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 25-17).
Columbia College came out in the first set of the match and jumped all over Tabor early as they took a quick 7-2 lead. They continued to play well as the set progressed but a 7-2 run from the Bluejays cut the Cougars lead to 14-12 midway through the game. Columbia College answered with a 6-4 run of their own and never looked back as they took the first set by a final score of 25-21 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second game, both sides came out and exchanged points early. With the score tied at 10, the Cougars were able to go on a 5-1 run to take a 15-11 lead midway through the set. The Bluejays did their best to get back into the game and were able to cut the Cougars lead to two but that was as close as they would get as Columbia took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-20 victory.
After dropping the third set by a final score of 25-22, the Cougars came out in the fourth game and jumped out to an early 9-4 lead. Despite being down early, the Bluejays battled back and were able to cut Columbia's lead to 15-14 midway through the set. The Cougars responded by scoring the next six points in the game and never let Tabor back in the set as they solidified their first win of the 2017 NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championships with a 25-17 victory.
Pamela Jaime led the way for the Cougars as she finished with a match high 17 kills. In addition to Jaime, Jordan Wolfe racked up 12 kills, Yamilet Velazquez tallied a match high 41 assists, and Gabriela Walton added a match high 25 digs to round out the top performers for Columbia.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow, November 30th when they continue pool play in the 2017 NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championships. Columbia College will take on eighth ranked Grand View (Iowa) University at 8 p.m.
