Columbia, Mo. – The seventh ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back in action this afternoon as they hosted the Lyon (Ark.) College Scots in an AMC matchup for their last regular season game. The Cougars swept the Scots (25-19, 25-17, 25-13) to improve to 31-5 on the season and 11-1 in conference play. With today's win Columbia secured Co-Conference Champions along with Park (Mo.) University.
To start the match, both teams battled back and forth with the score tied at 5 early in the first set. The Cougars went on a 9-4 run to take a 14-9 lead midway through. The Scots did not back down as they cut Columbia's lead to two, four different times down the stretch. The Cougars were able to use a 4-1 run to close out the first set with a 25-20 victory.
Columbia took a quick 5-1 lead to start the second set, but Lyon wasted no time as they tied the game at 5. Neither team could distance themselves from one another as they were tied 13-13 midway through the set. The Cougars got their offense rolling and used a 12-4 run to win the set 25-17 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Columbia carried their momentum into the third set as they jumped to a 7-3 lead. The Scots did their best, but the Cougars would dominate the set as they held an 18-9 lead late in the game. Columbia secured the final points to win by a score of 25-13 and take the match 3-0.
Columbia was led by Caroline Clifford and Pamela Jaime who recorded eight and seven kills, respectively. In addition, Gabriela Walton had 12 digs, while Yamilet Velazquez tallied 23 assists.
The Cougars are back in action Tuesday, November 7th when they host Stephens (Mo.) College in the AMC Tournament Quarterfinals. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m. in Southwell Complex.
