Cougars Take Down Owls

Fulton, Mo. – This afternoon the 16th ranked Columbia College women's basketball team was back in action when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri to take on the William Woods (Mo.) University Owls in an AMC matchup. The Cougars dominated the Owls as they won by a final score of 78-52 and improved to 6-3 on the season and 4-0 in conference play.

To start the game each team exchanged the first couple baskets, but the Cougars were able to use a 13-5 run to separate themselves from the Owls as they led 18-9 with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter. Columbia remained in control as they led 23-15 after the first.

The Cougars came out firing as they went on an 8-0 run to start the second quarter leading the Owls 33-15. As the half progressed, Columbia's offense was rolling as they extended their lead 44-25 with two and half to go before the break. Columbia controlled the first half heading into the locker room leading 44-27. The Cougars shot 46 percent from the field and 40 percent from three in the half, as they held Woods to just 30 percent from the field and only 8 percent from beyond the arc. Sarah Walters and Raegan Wieser led all scorers at the break with 12 and 11 points respectively.

The Cougars carried their momentum into the second half as they dominated the game outscoring the Owls 25-10 in the third quarter. Columbia defended well and were able to extend their lead to 32 as they led 69-37 heading into the fourth.  William Woods continued to battle, but the Cougars could not be stopped as they solidified a 78-52 victory.

Sarah Walters led all scorers with 17 points. In addition, Morgan Brandt recorded a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Raegan Wieser had 14 points and a season high seven rebounds, while Jordan Alford tallied 12 points and dished out a season high four assists. Geena Stephens also recorded a career high eight rebounds in the contest.  

Columbia is back in action on Thursday, December 7th, when they host College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in a non-conference matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in Southwell Complex.
