Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – Today the 16th ranked Columbia College women's basketball team was back in action when they traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to face Harris-Stowe State University in an AMC matchup. The Cougars were able to defeat the Hornets by a final score of 60-48 and improved to 9-5 on the season and 7-1 in conference play.
It was a bit of a sloppy start for both teams as each team had multiple turnovers as they were trying to settle in. The game was tied 8-8 with five minutes to go in the first before the Hornets went on an 8-2 run to take a 16-10 lead heading into the second quarter.
To start the second, the Cougars were looking to clean it up and get their offense rolling. As the quarter progressed, Columbia chipped away at the Hornet's lead, cutting it to three with 5:30 to go in the half. Harris-Stowe extended their lead back to six, but the Cougars would fight back as they cut the lead to two with under two minutes to go before the break. After a physical first half, Columbia would head into halftime trailing 27-31. The Cougars took advantage of their ability to get to the line as they were 9-10 from the charity stripe.
The Cougars came out of the break looking to steal some Hornet momentum. Battling through some adversity, the Cougars stuck together and did not get frazzled. After an 'and one' play from Morgan Brandt the game was tied at 37. The big play from Brandt gave the Cougars the energy boost they needed as they went on a 10-2 run to close out the third quarter leading 47-39.
Columbia came out playing tough defense in the final quarter of play as they led 51-43 with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Harris-Stowe continued to battle, but the Cougars remained in control of the final quarter and secured a 60-48 victory over the Hornets.
Columbia was led by Morgan Brandt who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. In addition, Ashlee Marlatt tallied 16 points and five assists, while Alexis Uffmann had a team high eight rebounds in the contest.
Columbia College is back in action on Tuesday, January 2nd when they travel to Parkville, Missouri to take on Park (Mo.) University in an AMC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
