Cougars Fall to Vikings in Extra Innings

Joplin, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they traveled to Joplin, Missouri, to compete in the 2017 Joplin Tourney. The Cougars opened the tournament against Grand View (Iowa) University and were defeated by the Vikings 9-8 in extra innings.

The Cougars got off to a great start in this game as they were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a towering homerun from Andrew Warner over the left field fence in the first inning. However, the Vikings bounced back quickly and scored one run in the third and five runs in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead midway through the contest.

Despite allowing the Vikings to take a big lead, the Cougars remained resilient and battled with every at-bat. They were able to score four runs over the next three innings and cut the Vikings lead down to one with just two innings remaining in the contest. Grand View did their best to fend off the Cougars late in the game but after the Vikings scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a three run lead, Columbia College answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at eight and send it into extras.

In extra innings, the Cougars did a great job of putting the ball in play and giving themselves opportunities to score. However, the Vikings played tough defensively and were able to pick up the game winning run in the top of the ninth to hand Columbia College their fifth loss of the season.

Cody Ebert was the starting pitcher for the Cougars allowing six earned runs on five hits while striking out one in four innings of work. Offensively, Columbia College was led by Andrew Warner who went 2-3 with an RBI and Blade McKee who went 2-5 with two RBI's.

The Cougars are back in action tomorrow morning when they face 25th ranked MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) University followed by William Penn (Iowa) University on the second day of the 2017 Joplin Tourney. Columbia College will take on the Pioneers from MidAmerica Nazarene at 11 a.m. followed by a 1:30 p.m. start against the Statesmen from William Penn.
