Box Score Columbia, Mo. – Tonight the 13
th ranked Columbia College women's basketball team was back in action when they traveled across town to take on Stephens (Mo.) College in an AMC matchup. The Cougars were able to defeat the Stars by a final score of 78-45 and improved to 21-4 on the season and 15-4 in conference play.
With Saturday's win over Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University, the Cougars picked up their 20
th win of the season. This is the 13
th time the women's basketball team has hit the mark since the program was reinstated in 2001 and the third time under current head coach
Jessica Keller who sits at 70-21 in three seasons as Columbia's head coach.
The Cougars got off to a quick start in this game as they jumped out to an early 12-2 lead thanks to seven points from
Mai Nienhueser in the first five minutes of the first quarter. They continued to push the tempo on the offensive end and forced the Stars to take tough shots on the defensive end as Columbia held Stephens to just five field goals in the first half. They forced the Stars to turn the ball over 10 times in the period and took a 35-13 lead into the halftime break. Columbia College was led by
Ashlee Marlatt who had nine points in the half.
The Cougars continued to play well in the second half and were able to outscore the Stars 23-15 in the third quarter to take a 30 point lead into the final period. Stephens College did their best to get back into the game but the Cougars were too much to handle down the stretch and Columbia was able to cruise to their fourth straight victory.
The Cougars had several players finish in double figures including
Sarah Walters who finished with a game high 19 points in the contest. In addition to Walters,
Morgan Brandt had 14 points and
Mai Nienhueser finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday, February 11
th when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on Missouri Baptist University in an AMC contest. Columbia College defeated the Spartans in their last matchup by a final score of 88-58 in a game that
Ashlee Marlatt finished with 15 points. The game is set to tip off at 1 p.m.
