Columbia, Mo. – Today the Columbia College baseball team was back on the diamond when they took on Morthland (Ill.) College in the final two games of a three game series. The Cougars, who were victorious in a 10-0 win over the Patriots on Friday, were able to extend their winning streak to 11 straight games after defeating Morthland in the first game by a final score of 12-2 and then winning the second game by a final score of 13-1. With the series sweep, Columbia College improves to 19-7 on the season.
The Cougars were rolling in the first game of the day as they were able to score three runs in the first, three runs in the third, three runs in the fifth, and three runs in the sixth to solidify their 18
th win of the season. Columbia College put together 15 hits on a .484 team batting average while accumulating six stolen bases in the contest.
J.W. McGraw was the winning pitcher for the Cougars allowing just one hit and zero earned runs in six innings of work. McGraw, who gave up his only hit of the ballgame in the top of the first inning, retired 17 straight batters for Columbia College while racking up seven strikeouts in his second win of the season. Offensively, the Cougars were led by
Reed Sprinkle who went 1-2 with three RBI's including a two run homerun in the bottom of the third inning.
In the second game, the Cougars got off to another quick start as
Ethan Howser reached on a walk to start the game and then came around to score on a double from
Kenny Piper to give Columbia an early lead in the ballgame. The Patriots responded quickly and scored a run of their own in the top of the second to tie the game at one but then it was all Cougars as Columbia scored two runs in the second, three in the third, five in the fourth, and two in the fifth to complete the three game sweep over the Patriots.
Jeremy Rettig was the starting pitcher for the Cougars improving to 6-1 on the season after allowing just two hits and one earned run in six innings on the mound.
Kenny Piper and
Tanner Allen led Columbia's efforts at the plate in this one as Piper went 2-4 with three RBI's and Allen went 3-4 with two runs scored.
In addition,
Andrew Warner, the reigning AMC Player of the Week, went 1-4 at the plate in the first game and 2-3 in the second game to extend his hitting streak to 17 straight games. Warner, a junior catcher out of Lees Summit, Missouri, has been on a tear all season long and is currently leading the team in batting average (.466), RBI's (35), and hits (41).
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday, March 21
st when they travel to Canton, Missouri, to take on Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College in a nonconference matchup. Columbia will play just one game against the Wildcats starting at 3 p.m.
