Cougars Down Owls

Fulton, Mo. – Tonight the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on William Woods (Mo.) University in the first game of a three game AMC series. The Cougars, who currently sit second in the conference standings, were able to defeat the Owls by a final score of 10-3 and improved to 27-13 on the season.

Columbia College came out in the game and had a tough time getting anything going through the first six innings of play. The Owls took advantage of the lack of Cougar offense and were able to score one run in the bottom of the second to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Despite struggling to score runs, Columbia's bats came alive in the sixth inning and the Cougars were able to use a two run homerun from Andrew Warner to rally for four runs in the frame. William Woods responded quickly to the big inning from Columbia and answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the six to cut the Cougars lead to one late in the game. However, Columbia was able to score six runs over the final three innings to solidify their 27th win of the season.

Zach Maskill was on the mound for the Cougars in this one as the lone senior on the team tallied five strikeouts while allowing eight hits and three earned runs in 5.0 innings of work. Offensively, Columbia was led by Jordan Wright who went 2-5 with three RBI's and Ethan Howser who went 3-5 with two RBI's.

The Cougars return to the field tomorrow afternoon when they take on William Woods University in the final two games of the three game series. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 12 p.m. with the second to follow in Fulton, Missouri.
