Clermont, Fla. – This afternoon the second seeded Columbia College softball team was back in action when they faced off against Southern Oregon University in the 2017 NAIA Softball World Series. The Cougars, who came into this game with a 1-1 record in the double elimination tournament, put together a nine hit outing as they defeated the Raiders by a final score of 5-2. With the win, Columbia improves to 48-6 on the season.
The Cougars got off to a tough start in the contest as the Raiders were able to rally for two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead in the ballgame. Columbia College had a tough time getting anything going offensively through the first few innings of play but were able to cut the Raiders lead in half in the top of the third inning following an RBI single from
Molly Carter and then were able to tie the game on the very next pitch after
Theresa DeCosty stole home.
Neither side was able to score over the next few innings, but the Cougars took their first lead of the ballgame in the top of the fifth inning when
Molly Carter knocked in her second RBI of the game scoring Carly Spaliding from third. They continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and were able to add to their lead in the top of the seventh inning following a two out RBI single from
Allyson Metz scoring
Carly Spalding and
Theresa DeCosty to take a 5-2 lead in the game. The Raiders threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh but the Cougars defense stepped up and picked up the final outs of the contest to solidify their second win of the 2017 NAIA Softball World Series.
Lauren McCroskie (22-2) was the starting pitcher in the game as the senior allowed two earned runs in 0.2 innings of work.
Paxton Welch (23-4) came in to relieve McCroskie in the first inning and struck out two batters while allowing five hits in the final 6.1 innings of the game. Offensively, Columbia College was led by
Carly Spalding who went 3-4 with three runs scored,
Molly Carter who went 2-4 with two RBI's, and
Allyson Metz who went 1-4 with two RBI's.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow, May 31
st when they continue play in the 2017 NAIA Softball World Series. They will face LSU-Alexandria (La.) in an elimination game at 3 p.m. CDT. If Columbia College wins, they will play a second game tomorrow night at 7 p.m. CDT.
