Cougars Extend Winning Streak to Seven Straight Matches

Walnut Ridge, Ark. – The seventh ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back on the court this afternoon when they traveled to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, to take on Williams Baptist (Ark.) College in an AMC match. The Cougars, who swept Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University last night to open conference play, were able to extend their winning streak to seven straight matches after sweeping the Eagles in three straight sets (25-19, 25-5, 25-19). With the win, Columbia College improves to 12-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

In the first set of the match, the Cougars looked flat early and allowed the Eagles to jump out to a quick 6-4 lead. However, Columbia College bounced back quickly and were able to go on a 10-0 run to take an eight point lead midway through the set. The Eagles did their best to get back into the game but the Cougars were able to close out the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 victory. Zori Curry had a game high six kills in the set.

Columbia College continued to play well in the second set and were able to jump out to an early 13-1 lead over the Eagles. They played well on both sides of the ball throughout the game holding Williams Baptist to just three kills on 20 attacks while posting a 0.765 attacking percentage of their own. The eagles were never able to get anything going in the game and the Cougars cruised to a 25-5 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set of the match, Columbia College jumped out to another quick lead as they started the game with five kills on five attacks to take a 6-2 lead. Despite being down, the Eagles battled throughout the entire game but were unable to catch up to Columbia as the Cougars took the third set by final score of 25-19 to complete the three game sweep.

Zori Curry and Caroline Clifford led the way for the Cougars offensively as Curry finished with a match high 16 kills and Clifford added another 15 kills. In addition, Yamilet Velazquez had a match high 33 assists and Gabriela Walton added 15 digs to lead the way for Columbia.

The Cougars are back in action on Monday, September 18th when they travel to Belleville, Illinois, to take on Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.) in an AMC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
