Columbia, Mo. – The seventh ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back in action tonight to take on St. Louis College of Pharmacy in their first home conference game of the season. The Cougars were able to sweep the Eutectics in three straight sets (25-19; 25-17; 25-15) to improve to 13-3 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.
In the first set, the Cougars got out to a quick start with a 5-3 lead over the Eutectics. They continued to put the pressure on St. Louis College of Pharmacy as they used a 5-2 run to take a 12-7 lead midway through the first set. The Eutectics did their best to catch the Cougars but fell to Columbia 25-19 in the first set.
The Cougars kept the momentum as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead to start the second set and held a 15-7 lead midway through the game. The Eutectics cut the lead down to three late in the set, but were unable to get any closer as the Cougars took set two 25-17.
The Eutectics came out and exchanged points with the Cougars to start the third set. With the game tied at 8, the Cougars went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-9 lead midway through the third set and cruised to a 25-15 victory in the final game to complete the three game sweep.
Pamela Jaime led the way for the Cougars with a match high 15 kills. Caroline Clifford and Ariadne Borges chipped in with 12 and 10 kills respectively. Yamilet Velazquez led in assists with 39.
The Cougars are back in action on Monday September 25th when they travel to Stephens (Mo.) College to face an in town AMC foe. Game time is set for 7pm.
