Columbia Takes Down Hornets 3-0

Columbia, Mo. – The third ranked Columbia College volleyball team took the court today as they hosted the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets in an AMC matchup. The Cougars exterminated the Hornets in three sets (25-7, 25-13, 25-13). The Cougars now improve to 22-1 on the season and 6-0 in conference play.

Prior to the game, the NAIA national office announced the third regular season Women's Volleyball Coaches Top 25 Poll. The Cougars remained at number three after going undefeated since the last poll came out, while sweeping eight of their last nine matches.

A strong start from the Cougars as it was 6-1 to start, causing an early Hornet timeout. The timeout did not affect Columbia as they continued to skate through set one leading 15-3. The Cougars took set one 25-7 to lead the match 1-0.

Set two started off closer than the first as the Hornets trailed 7-5. Columbia was struggling as the Hornets tied the game at 9. However, the Cougars were able to gain some space taking a 15-10 lead, as Harris-Stowe called another timeout. The Cougars held their ground winning set two 25-13.

Just like the second, the third was tight to start, with the Cougars leading 6-5. As HSSU called their third timeout of the match, Columbia had inched ahead 9-5. The Cougars stretched their lead as it was 16-9. The Hornets did their best, but could not overcome Columbia as the Cougars solidified the sweep 25-13.

Columbia was led by Caroline Clifford and Kiersten Anderson who each had 11 kills. In addition, Thais Andrade tallied 14 digs and Clifford added 13, while Manuela Vargas recorded 26 assists in the match.

The volleyball team is back in action Thursday, October 4th, when they travel to St. Louis Missouri to face the Missouri Baptist University Spartans in an AMC contest. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
