Cougar Volleyball Improves to 1-1 in Pool Play

Sioux City, Iowa – Today the third ranked Columbia College volleyball team returned to the court for day two in the 2018 NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championships. On day two of pool play, the Cougars swept the Vanguard (Calif.) University Lions (25-18, 25-20, 25-11) to move to 38-4 on the season and 1-1 in pool play.

As the game began, set one was kept close early as the Cougars led 7-5. Columbia took a quick 10-5 lead as the Lions called the first timeout of the game. Following the timeout, the Cougars run continued as the score was 16-7, causing another Vanguard timeout. The Lions tried to work their way back in as they trailed 24-18, but the Cougars grabbed the last point to take set one 25-18.

Columbia again held the early lead, 6-2, as the Lions called their first timeout of the second set. As the set progressed, the Lions cut it to three, 14-11. Vanguard stuck around, tying the set at 17. The Lions took a one point lead as Columbia wanted a timeout. The Cougars found themselves down 23-20, as they called another timeout. Columbia went on a 5-0 run to come back and take the set 25-23 and hold a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Columbia was in front 7-2, with a sweep on their minds as the third set was underway. As the Cougars were in control 13-4, the Lions called time. Vanguard kept fighting, but Columbia went on to secure the final set 25-11.

Columbia was led by Caroline Clifford who recorded seven kills and Kiersten Anderson had six. In addition, Thais Andrade tallied 13 digs, while Manuela Vargas had 23 assists in the contest.

The Cougars are back in action tomorrow, November 29th when they continue play in Pool C of the 2018 NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championships. Columbia College will take on the Midland (Neb.) University Warriors at 4 p.m.
