Women’s Soccer Advances to Finals of AMC Championships

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action tonight when they played host to the Park (Mo.) University Pirates in the AMC Women's Soccer Championship Semifinals. The Cougars were able to defeat the Pirates by a final score of 3-0 to improve to 14-4-1 on the season and 12-1-1 in the AMC.

In the first half of the match, both sides came out and created quality scoring chances in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Cougars were able to score the first goal of the contest with just over 21 minutes to play in the half when Allison Floyd played the ball over the top to Kelsey Mirts who headed the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net for her 14th tally of the season. Columbia College did their best to add a second goal before the halftime break but were unable to find the back of the net as the score remained 1-0 at the end of the first half. The Cougars outshot the Pirates 7-2 in the period and put three shots on target.

Columbia College came out in the second half and controlled the possession early. They were able to add a second goal, 14 minutes into the half, when Abby Meyer played a ball to Molly Klein who was able to touch it past the Pirates keeper and slotted it into the open goal for her 14th goal of the season to extend the lead to 2-0. Kelsey Mirts added a third goal for the Cougars with 21 minutes left to play in the half when she was able to win a ball that was played over the top and slipped it past the Pirates keeper for her second goal of the game to make the score 3-0. The Pirates did their best to get back into the contest but the Cougars played tough defense and were able to close them out down the stretch to advance to the AMC Women's Soccer Championship Finals.

Erin Jones (3-2-1) was in goal tonight for Columbia making two saves in her second solo shutout of the season.

The women's soccer team is back in action on Thursday, November 8th when they play host to the William Woods (Mo.) University Owls in the AMC Women's Soccer Championship Finals. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. on R. Marvin Owen's Field.
