Box Score Walnut Ridge, Ark. – The fourth ranked Columbia College women's basketball team traveled to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas as they faced the Williams Baptist University Eagles in an AMC contest. Columbia soared to victory 72-51 over the Eagles. The Cougars improve to 9-1 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.
Columbia started out the game forcing an Eagle turnover on the first possession and would hit a three on the transition as the Eagles called a very early timeout. The Cougars would bang 3-3 from beyond the arc, each coming from a different Cougar, as they went on a 9-0 run before Williams Baptist was able to crack the scoreboard. After a quick start for Columbia in the first five minutes, leading 11-4, the game would go scoreless over the next couple minutes until the Eagles sunk a free throw to make it 11-5 with under two and a half to go in the first. At the end of the first, Columbia was up 16-7. The Eagles would call another timeout about two minutes into the second quarter as they trailed 17-9. Throughout the second, the Cougars remained in control. The Eagles cut it to 10, but Columbia would stretch their lead back out as they were up 31-19 at the break. The Cougars had 13 steals on 16 Eagle turnovers, resulting in 17 points off of turnovers in the first half.
In the third, Columbia came out and pushed their lead to 20 as it was 47-27, and Williams Baptist would call another timeout, trying to regroup. As the game progressed, the Eagles were struggling to catch up to the Cougars as the score was 51-34 heading into the final quarter. Williams Baptist tried to make a push, but Columbia kept their distance with a comfortable lead. The Cougars flew to a 72-51 win over the Eagles.
Jordan Alford (14) and Mai Nienhueser (11) were each in double-digits. Alford also dished out six assists, while Morgan Brandt grabbed seven rebounds on the night. Columbia finished shooting 48 percent from the field and 42 from three. In addition, the Cougars had 18 steals on 27 Eagle turnovers.
The women's basketball team will travel to Henderson, Tennessee on Saturday, December 15th to take on the number two ranked Freed-Hardeman University Lions in the AMC Game of the Week. The game will tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
